Mr. W. O. Blackstone, a steamfitter by trade, started W.O. Blackstone in 1937 with one truck and a helper. The business grew dramatically during World War II, with Mr. Blackstone adding to the work force as volume increased. Harry McDowell, a 1937 Mechanical Engineering graduate of NC State University, was released from active duty in the US Navy in 1946, and joined Mr. Blackstone as a full partner.
In 1958, Lewis Caswell, upon his graduation from the University of South Carolina with a Mechanical Engineering degree, was hired as an estimator/project manager. Mr. Blackstone retired in 1970, with McDowell succeeding him as President, and becoming majority stockholder. In 1982, McDowell retired and Caswell became President and majority stockholder. In 2013, after reaching an agreement with Caswell to purchase the majority of stock shares, Jeff Griffin assumed the role of President and CEO. Mr. Caswell remains Chairman. Griffin holds an MBA from the University of Colorado and an Economics degree from the University of South Carolina.
